What does a hyrox look like?

My First HYROX: The Hardest 8K of My Life (And I’d Do It Again)

There are moments when you think:
“What the hell did I sign up for?”

For me, that moment hit somewhere around meter 60 of the burpee broad jumps. My legs were on fire, my breathing was a mess, and yet i felt alive. Welcome to HYROX.

Let me take you through my first HYROX race: a brutal, beautifully structured mix of running, strength, and sheer mental will. If you’ve never heard of HYROX before no worries. By the end of this post, you’ll know exactly what it is, what to expect, and why you might want to challenge yourself with it.

So, what is HYROX?

HYROX is a global fitness race that combines 8 kilometers of running with 8 functional workouts always in the same order, always indoors, and always tough.

The setup is simple:
1 km run → 1 workout → 1 km run → next workout…
Until you’ve completed 8 of each.

What makes it unique is that every HYROX event worldwide follows the same format. So you can compare your times, compete against others, or just against yourself — no mud, no obstacles, just clean, pure effort.

My HYROX Race: The Breakdown

Standing at the start line, I felt pumped and nervous. Loud music, buzzing crowd, athletes warming up. And then — GO.

1. 1 km run

Smooth start. Easy pace, controlled breathing. “Just warming up,” I thought.

2. 1,000 m SkiErg

That thought died quickly. Shoulders lit up instantly. If you’ve never done SkiErg: imagine upright rowing while simulating cross-country skiing — all effort, no mercy.

3. 1 km run

Already heavier than expected. And this was just the beginning…

4. Sled Push (50 m)

A weighted sled (125–175 kg depending on your division) that you push across turf. Felt like dragging a car uphill. Brutal.

5. 1 km run

Legs felt like concrete.

6. Sled Pull (50 m)

Same sled, but now you pull it using a thick rope. My grip started to fail, back was under pressure.

7. 1 km run

This run was more about mental strength than pace.

8. Burpee Broad Jumps (80 m)

A burpee, then a long jump. Repeat. For 80 meters. Soul crushing. Everyone around me was suffering.

9. 1 km run

Starting to zone out. Focus only on the next rep, next step.

10. Rowing (1,000 m)

Sitting down finally… but no rest. Legs, back, lungs — all under fire.

11. 1 km run

Silence among the athletes. Everyone was deep in their own mental grind.

12. Farmers Carry (200 m)

Two heavy kettlebells. You carry them as far as you can. Forearms screaming, grip disappearing.

13. 1 km run

Almost there. Just a couple more stations…

14. Walking Lunges with Sandbag (100 m)

Sandbag on your shoulders. Deep lunges. Legs were done, but I pushed through.

15. 1 km run

Last run. The crowd lifts you. Every step hurts, but you’re too close to quit.

16. Wall Balls (75–100 reps)

Squat, throw, catch, repeat. Your heart says stop. Your mind says finish. And then… you’re done.

What I Learned from HYROX

  • It’s a complete test: cardio, strength, pacing, grip, mental toughness.
  • The order is cruel by design: you’re never comfortable — always in that zone of “just enough rest to suffer again.”
  • It’s for everyone: Whether you’re a runner, lifter, or hybrid athlete — HYROX will challenge you.
  • The vibe is incredible: Competitive, but super supportive. The community, crowd, and volunteers carry you through.

Who Should Try HYROX?

You’ll love HYROX if you:

  • Enjoy both running and strength training
  • Want a structured fitness goal
  • Like measurable progress
  • Love pushing your limits

You can compete:

  • Solo (Open or Pro)
  • Doubles (split workouts)
  • Team Relay (4 people each doing 2 workouts)

Tips for Your First HYROX

  1. Train the transitions – practice running + workout combinations.
  2. Work on grip and core – it will save you in multiple stations.
  3. Don’t neglect recovery – foam rolling, massage guns, electrolytes help massively.
  4. Pick the right shoes – I wore the Reebok Nano X3 — stable, grippy, ideal.
  5. Hydrate before the event – there’s little time to drink during.

Final Verdict

Would I recommend HYROX?
